Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. Her career as a musician, film and TV artist has earned her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received a Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr., a policeman and Rita teacher of Irvington High School. Latifah's parents divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. aged, was 10 years old. Latifah was born and raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Her stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was given by her aunt when she was eight. Always tall, at 5'10, Latifah was a forward for the basketball team at her high school. The number she sang was home from the musical The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was among the members of the original version of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted composed of MCs and producers led by DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created a demo of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and, in 1988, released her first track Wrath of My Madness.
